There are opportunities here for rising sophomores, juniors, and
seniors, as well as for students who will have graduated (most awards
are still open to you). You'll learn from previous winners and
selection committee members what it takes to be competitive and what
the applications entail. Bring your friends and neighbors. If you

For Both Undergraduates and Graduates:
- RHODES SCHOLARSHIP 2-3 years of study at Oxford in any subject. The deadline is in early October 2006, but Rice's internal nomination deadline will be earlier. Interested students should start preparing this semester, and do the application over the summer. There is no minimum GPA for the Rhodes. The interview is the most important part of the application. Demonstrated commitment to the betterment of society is essential. http://www.rhodesscholar.org
- MARSHALL SCHOLARSHIP 2-3 years of study at any British university in any subject. Applicants who wish to go somewhere other than Oxford, Cambridge, and London may have an edge. Minimum GPA is 3.7. The emphasis is on academic excellence. Some new Marshall Scholarship partnerships have been created, notably with the NIH in Bethesda, which is a 4-year program. http://www.marshallscholarship.org
- Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Fellowship? Three years of stipend ($18,000/year) for any type of graduate school, including law, business, and medicine. Applicants must certify they are not Communists. [No web site].
- Watson Fellowship $25,000 for a year of directed travel. Student may not study during the year and may not return to the United States. The highest-ranked Rice applicant who does not receive a Watson will receive an equivalent Zeff Fellowship. http://www.watsonfellowship.org/
- Luce Scholarship One year living and working in the Far East, for those who have never spent time there or studied about the area. Applications for countries other than China are particularly welcomed. Maximum age of 29. http://www.hluce.org/3scholfm.html
For Undergraduates:
- Sigma Xi Deadline: March 15. The program awards grants of up to $1,000 to students from all areas of the sciences and engineering. Designated funds from the National Academy of Sciences allow for grants of up to $5,000 for astronomy research and $2,500 for vision related research.
- Robotics Institute Summer Scholars Deadline: March 30. This is a new summer internship program for highly qualified and motivated undergraduate students. Interns who are accepted into the program will have a chance to work on state-of-the-art research projects at Carnegie Mellon's world-renowned Robotics Institute.
- Royce Builders Foundation for Youth Deadline: April 3. Each scholarship is $2500. Current freshmen, sophomores, and juniors may apply. Scholarships are awarded based upon academic achievement, financial need, commitment to a college education, and involvement in school and community activities.
- Truman Scholarship For juniors commited to a career in public service. The premier scholarship in this domain. $30,000 for graduate school. Academic excellence must be combined with evidence of leadership and understanding of the policy-making process. http://www.truman.gov/
- Goldwater Scholarship This $7,500 award for sophomores and juniors in science, math, and engineering marks the most promising young scientists. Students who have developed a research profile will be most competitive. http://www.act.org/goldwater
For Graduates:
- Sigma Xi a national multidisciplinary scientific society with over 80,000 members. Deadline: March 15. At the local level they award Rice/TMC Ph.D. thesis awards. A new award this year (2006) is the Graduate Student Award Competition in Science and Engineering. It represents a competition of graduate students from all Rice/TMC institutions including Rice, Baylor College of Medicine, and The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston / University of Texas MD Anderson. Talk to Dr. Taha for additional information. Nominations of graduate students for this award are being sought at this time. In order to be nominated graduate students must:
- Be currently be enrolled as student at their respective institution in a graduate degree seeking program.
- Have won or been runner up (1st-3rd place or equivalent) at an institutional poster or oral competition.
- The presented work must be their own.
- Subject areas are highly inclusive and include all science and engineering sub-disciplines.
- NSF Graduate Fellowship (GRFP) The National Science Foundation aims to ensure the vitality of the human resource base of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in the United States and to reinforce its diversity by offering approximately 1,000 graduate fellowships in this competition. The Graduate Research Fellowship provides three years of support for graduate study leading to research-based master's or doctoral degrees and is intended for students who are at the early stages of their graduate study. The Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) invests in graduate education for a cadre of diverse individuals who demonstrate their potential to successfully complete graduate degree programs in disciplines relevant to the mission of the National Science Foundation.
